Together with INNOLAB Bilbao, we brought together companies, experts, and stakeholders from the digital ecosystem to analyze how a comprehensive data strategy—from identifying needs and governance to technological infrastructures such as data spaces and AI factories—is key to unlocking the full potential of artificial intelligence.
Last week, together with INNOLAB Bilbao, we hosted the conference “Data Strategy as an Enabler of AI Factories, ” an event that highlighted how the success of AI depends, to a large extent, on organizations’ ability to manage, govern, and share their data securely and efficiently.
The session was opened by our colleague Joséba Laka, Director of Digital, and Ane Miren, Director of Modernization for the City of Bilbao, who highlighted the importance of collaboration among companies, government agencies, and technology providers to foster a data-driven economy and accelerate the digital transformation of the industrial sector.
One of the highlights of the day was the keynote address by Francisca Rubio, Director of Expansion and Ecosystem at Gaia-X Hub Spain, who shared her vision on the strategic role of data spaces and the need to move toward more interoperable, sovereign, and reliable information-sharing models, in line with European initiatives.
Data Governance: A Key Component of AI
Throughout the day, it became clear that AI cannot be developed without a solid data foundation. The quality, availability, interoperability, and security of information are essential to building trust and ensuring that organizations can derive real value from their digital assets.
In this context, data governance has emerged as an essential element for defining rules, responsibilities, and mechanisms that enable the secure sharing of information while maintaining control over the data and ensuring its responsible use.
KATEA Data Space: A New Link to Accelerate Data Spaces
During the meeting, our colleague Enrique Areizaga officially presented KATEA Data Space, the newest addition to the KATEA ecosystem, designed to simplify the creation, deployment, and management of data spaces. It was jointly developed by the digital teams at TECNALIA, DATAC, and CIBER, combining capabilities in data, interoperability, cybersecurity, identity, and trust.
This new platform enables organizations to connect within trusted environments through the integration of identity, governance, and interoperability capabilities, facilitating the secure exchange of information and reducing the technological complexity associated with setting up a data space.
KATEA Data Space is part of a broader offering from TECNALIA designed to support organizations throughout the entire data economy cycle—from identifying needs, defining methodologies, and establishing technological architectures, to deploying specific solutions. This ecosystem includes capabilities such as KATEA Data Lab, which focuses on in-house data storage and governed data management environments; secure computing environments; and KATEA Data Space itself, which facilitates the secure exchange of information between organizations.
European Initiatives and Entrepreneurial Vision
The event also provided an opportunity to learn about initiatives such as AI-MATTERSand BSC AI-Factoryfor the development and implementation of AI, presented by our colleagues Erkuden Rios and Begoña Sanchez.
In addition, representatives from Inkolan, LKS NEXT, AFM Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, Acuratio, and ERHARDT Serikat participated in a roundtable discussion moderated by our colleague from I&M, Merche Hernansaez, where they shared their perspectives on the impact of AI on the competitiveness of SMEs and the challenges associated with its adoption.
